Repository Search Forum: Public Discussion on Safety of Nuclear Waste Disposal

Around 385 interested persons participated in discussions at the first Repository Search Forum, which took place on 20 and 21 May 2022, both online and on site in Mainz. Over the course of two days, participants intensely debated questions regarding the safety of a nuclear waste repository. They also discussed time perspectives, issues of public participation, and how to deal with uncertainties.

In its interim report on sub-areas published in September 2020, the Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) mbH identified 90 sub-areas in Germany. The next step will be to narrow down the search for a possible repository site to a few regions for surface exploration. The discussion showed that both experts and the public at the Repository Search Forum generally approved of the relevant methodology as proposed by BGE mbH.

Broad discussion

A wide range of concrete technical questions were discussed. This included contributions on the topics of uncertainty and time as well as easy-to-understand introductory information. Repository concepts and host rock properties were discussed, together with questions about narrowing down exploration areas, and the participation of civil society. The National Citizens’ Oversight Committee (NBG) organised a panel discussion between the BGE mbH and representatives of the State Geological Services of Bavaria, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony and Thuringia.

Engaging in conversation

The diverse programme of the forum facilitated a dialogue between experts, citizens and municipal decision-makers. The first Repository Search Forum also adopted decisions on organisational issues and the following steps. All results will be officially documented so they can take effect in the process. In June, the Planning Team Repository Search (PFE) will evaluate the work done so far in order to further develop the format of the forum.

Election of the PFE

On Saturday afternoon, the participants of the Forum elected Eva Bayreuther, Andreas Fox, Bettina Gaebel, Dr Daniel Lübbert, Asta von Oppen, Heiko Schaak and Prof. Dr Anne-Dore Uthe as members of the new planning team. Farras Fathi, Asta Haberbosch, Oliver Helten and Johannes Hunger are new PFE members representing the young generation. Together with BASE and NBG, the planning team will continue to accompany the work of BGE mbH and prepare the next Repository Search Forum.
